ALKORPLAN – THE PINNACLE OF WATERPROOFING PROTECTION

AlkorPlan®, the robust single ply waterproofing membrane from manufacturer RENOLIT, has been selected to protect the roof of a landmark new mixed use development dominating the skyline of Leeds city centre. Bridgewater Place, on Neville Street by the River Aire, is a 32-storey office and residential tower standing 110m (361ft) high and comprising 22,000 sq m of offices and 200 luxury apartments with ground floor and atrium level restaurant, shops and bar, above lower level car parking. Costing an estimated £58m to build, construction on the tower commenced in February 2004 and was completed earlier this year, and all of the apartments have already been sold.

Peter Lucey of RENOLIT-approved contractor Kovara Projects Ltd explained: “Around 3500 sq m of adhered, ballasted and mechanically fixed AlkorPlan® was installed by our operatives on the roof over a 12-month period. Working at such a great height, and sometimes in very bad weather conditions, safety was a paramount concern for us. Luckily the Alkorplan system is flexible, lightweight and easy to handle, as well as offering quick and straightforward installation, enabling us to complete the job swiftly and safely.” In addition to this, the durable membrane is extremely resilient and long-lasting, with a life expectancy assessed by the BBA as being in excess of 30 years. This will ensure that the roof of the tower will be protected for decades to come.

    Bridgewater Place Leeds

The design for Bridgewater Place includes three buildings brought together by a magnificent eight storey glass atrium to create the region's largest single structure venue for commercial and leisure use. The upper 22 floors are dedicated to the luxury loft-style residential accommodation, topped by the Alkorplan-protected roof, with the lower floors designed to be used for the offices, shops and restaurants. The building is located on a 1.5 acre site overlooking Granary Wharf. Working with main contractor Bovis Lendlease and architect Aedas, engineering consultant Mott McDonald carried out value engineering of the previous structural scheme, with finite element analysis to optimise the basement car park slab, thin post-tensioned floor plates, rationalisation of the stability system by significant simplification of the core wall layouts, and elimination of the uneconomic sub basement.

Dominic Boyes, Director at Aedas Architects, said: "Our vision was to create a single destination with an atrium to provide a large, open and weatherproof space for all users. Bridgewater Place will provide a proud landmark for Leeds."

Roof of the Year 2006 in Hungary

AlkorPlan® membrane as used for the Roof of the Year 2006 in Hungary.

          Vati Building, Budapest (Hu)

An international Committee consisting of thirteen persons, including a representative from a member of IFD-SVDW (Mr. Ernst Weber, International Roofers Association - Swiss Roofers Association) and also a member from IFD-ZVDH(Mr. Artur Wierschem, International Roofers Association - German Roofers Association.) chose the roof of the “VÁTI” building as the Roof of the Year 2006 in Hungary.
The building is located in Budapest and was originally designed by Pataky & Horváth Architect Office. The Vati Building is approximately 100 years old and was built as a tobacco factory with offices.  The roof had previously been repaired in the past by using Hot Bitumen, but from time to time the roof still leaked. For the latest repair the heat insulation layer was replaced, corrections were made to the slopes before the RENOLIT AlkorPlan® membrane was installed to protect the 2233 square meter roof..

TECTUM Kft the approved contractor who installed the waterproofing membrane made a terrific job.  TECTUM Kft chose the AlkorPlan® membrane for this refurbishment project as it is easy to install, is UV, age and weather resistant.
TECTUM Kft set a very high standard of workmanship and achieved satisfactory results by ensuring professionalism and quality at every step of the process, resulting in the title of “Roof of the Year 2006” in Hungary.

The roof of the year is a contest organized annually, and compares the flat roofs on some critical aspects.
    The main critical aspects are:
    - roof covering system in accordance with the function of the building
    - applied materials and technology, way of installation according to the rules and standards
    - technical conformability of materials, layers, details
    - method of canalization and drainage
    - design details, harmonized with the installation
    - ability for maintenance, repair
    - aesthetical appearance.

  • Sale to Renolit
  • SALE OF SOLVAY’S INDUSTRIAL FOILS BUSINESS TO RENOLIT

Embargo : February 23, 2006 at 11:30 AM (Brussels Time)

    European commission approves
sale of SOLVAY’s Industrial Foils business to Renolit

SOLVAY SA takes note of the European Union’s competition authority decision of today, approving the sale of SOLVAY’s Industrial Foils business to RENOLIT AG. The activities concerned include the production, marketing and sales of plastic foils. Closing of the transaction is now expected in the coming weeks, pending relevant social procedures.
The approval of the European Commission was subject to conditions, namely the divestment of two SOLVAY production units serving the market of vinyl Flexible Technical Foils (FTF). These products are used, among other applications, for the manufacturing of stationery products, self-adhesive tapes and stickers, packaging items or cinema screens.
The production units concerned are located on the sites of Liancourt, France and Enkhuizen, The Netherlands; they employ a total of about 300 persons out of some 2,200 employees active in all the businesses concerned by the sales agreement between SOLVAY and RENOLIT.
RENOLIT AG - with the assistance of a monitoring trustee agreed by the European Commission - will be in charge of carrying out the divestments requested on a sustainable basis.
“The European Commission’s green light marks a decisive step in the sale of our flexible plastic foils activities to RENOLIT and will smooth the progress  of their subsequent integration into their new owners,” commented Jacques van Rijckevorsel, General Manager of Solvay’s Plastics Sector and Member of the Executive Committee of Solvay.
Regarding the strategic development of RENOLIT AG, Dr. Heinz Gärtner, RENOLIT’s CEO, quotes: “Proposing the remedies in question was a painful decision. Nevertheless the transaction is still serving RENOLIT’s strategic objectives. RENOLIT AG has been following a clear expansion strategy for years, both by regional acquisitions and organic growth. The SOLVAY foils activities are considered by RENOLIT as a platform for strategic development targeting further growth and coherent diversification. Both RENOLIT and SOLVAY foils business present numerous complementarities, at the benefit of the customers, mainly in terms of product range, geographical presence, R&D and innovation.”
As already announced, the agreed price of the transaction between SOLVAY and RENOLIT is EUR 330 million.

Future-oriented Recycling of PVC Roofing Membranes

    - In the Name of
    Nature

Early 2004 Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxemburg, France and Austria joined the collecting and recycling of end-of-life PVC roofing membranes initiative started in Germany in June 2003 by DUD (1) and ESWA (2), the German and European Roofing and Waterproofing Membranes’ Manufacturers. Project Teams were set up with representatives of ESWA Members in order to introduce the collecting and recycling system in these neighbouring countries. INTERSEROH, operating at a European level, remains the preferred Waste Management Partner in all new geographic areas.

Therefore in Belgium and France the first roof renovation projects started using INTERSEROH as collecting partner. In France a Project Team was formed within the CMES (3) section of ESWA associated member SFEC (4). An important 9000 m² roof renovation project (at Orly Airport, Paris) is due in July 2004 and will be the occasion to launch an information campaign.

In March 2004 the AfDR (5) Shareholders Meeting decided to stop the cryogenic recycling activities in Troisdorf, Germany by the end of 2004.

From January 2005 onwards roofing membranes to be recycled will be handled principally by Vinyloop in Ferrara. Geographically suitably located quantities as well as types of roofing materials/fixation systems that cannot be recycled by the Vinyloop process will be sent to Stigsnaes in the South of Denmark. Since early January 2004 PVC waste can be delivered to the Danish recycler “RGS 90”.

Recycling in Ferrara is an interim solution awaiting the start-up of Vinyloop plant in the North or North-East of France in 2006. Industrial partners joined to establish a new VINYLOOP plant, the investment sum is assumed to be about 50 Mio. EUR. The materials to be treated are PVC cables, floorings and roofing membranes.

The ESWA members rely on the Vinyloop process and intend to recycle 3000 tons per year. The Vinyloop technology was developed by the Research Centre of Solvay, Brussels and patented in 1998. After a pilot phase in Brussels the first production of recycled PVC took place in Ferrara in February 2002 (mainly PVC cable waste).

    (3) Comité Membranes Etanchéité Synthétiques
    (4) Syndicat Français des Enducteurs Calandreurs et Fabricants de Revêtement de Sols et de Murs
    (5) Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Dachbahnen-Recycling

The eco-balance of PVC products can considerably be improved using this new recycling technology. The high quality of the recycled material after the Vinyloop process allows the use in new high quality products.
The planned French plant will be specially configured for the recycling of end-of-life PVC roofing membranes and thus allows the manufacturers the use of membrane compounds for new PVC waterproofing membranes at reasonable prices.

In this way the manufacturers organised within ESWA and DUD ensure the recycling and re-use of their products in the future.

    Conclusion:

Due to their excellent material properties, their durability and ecological assessment PVC roofing membranes offer an optimum compared to conventional waterproofing systems. Today, PVC roofing membranes are modern materials to ensure long-term reliable waterproofings in the name of nature and thus increasing their market share in the European market.
